Your Eldercare Consultants work with older adults, often in consultation with their families, who may be at-risk due to changes in their well-being. Our services are varied and individualized.
Here are just a few ways we can help:
- Prepare for a possible crisis by creating a variety of pro-active “action plans.” For example, what is the course of action if mom or dad gets sick while supportive family members are out of town? Or… how would they get food during an extended period of bad weather?
- Counsel the older adult on how to manage emergency room visits. Advocate on behalf of the older adult during a hospital stay, rehabilitation and return home. Recommend rehabilitation options after an illness or hospital stay.
- How to choose and correctly use medical alert technology.
- Determine when a professional caregiver might be needed and how to select one.
- Provide a home safety assessment and implement the recommendations.
Situation: An elderly woman lived alone in a Chicago apartment and her two adult children lived in the suburbs. Her son and daughter traveled a lot for business but had worked out a good schedule to check on Mom regularly, making sure she always had enough food and was safe in her apartment. In January, however, both had to attend out-of-state conferences for their work during the same week. Though they could call Mom while they were gone, her hearing on a phone wasn’t great and they felt they needed someone to check-in on her to make sure she was OK.
Solution: The family asked Your Eldercare Consultants to be their “eyes and ears” during the 10 days they were out of town. Our team made sure she was taking her medicine, had enough food and reassured her that they would be available to assist her if she became ill while her children were out of town.
